Morocco’s national seismic monitoring and warning network measured the earthquake at magnitude 7 on the Richter scale. The US agency reported an aftershock of 4.9 magnitude earthquake 19 minutes later.

Highest intensity earthquake ever

This is the most intense earthquake ever to hit Morocco. Earthquakes occur relatively rarely in this North African country, but in 1960, an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude occurred near Agadir, due to which thousands of people died. The epicenter of Friday’s earthquake was on the peak of the Atlas Mountains, about 70 kilometers south of Marrakesh. USGS said that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 18 kilometers from the earth’s surface, while according to the Moroccan agency, its epicenter was at a depth of eight kilometers. According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere and Algeria’s Civil Protection Agency, the earthquake was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria.
