Sports Desk. Former South African Test captain Dean Elgar has announced his retirement from international cricket. The Test series against India will be his last series. The two-Test series between India and South Africa (IND vs SA) will start on 26 December with the first match at Centurion (SuperSport Park, Centurion). The 36-year-old left-handed batsman’s international cricket has been full of ups and downs. He has been in and out of the South African team for years. He played his last international match in March this year. South Africa has an excellent record in Tests at home. It has not lost a single test series against India at home. The South African team captained by Temba Bavuma would like to give a memorable farewell to Elgar by winning the series.
Let us tell you that as Test captain, Elgar has commanded the South African team in 17 matches. During this period, he led the team to victory in nine matches while the team had to face defeat in seven matches. One match was a draw. As captain, he scored 833 runs in 32 innings in Tests at an average of 26.87 and strike rate of 45.37. During this period, his highest score was 96 runs not out. He has played seven half-century innings as the captain of South Africa. Left-handed batsman Elgar has so far scored 5,146 runs in 84 Test cricket matches at an average of 27.28 and strike rate of 47.38. His highest score in the longest format of cricket has been 199 runs. He has 13 centuries and 23 half-centuries in his name in Test cricket. He has played only eight ODIs for the Proteas team in which he has scored 104 runs at an average of 17.33 and strike rate of 58.75.
Regarding retirement, Elgar said that as the saying goes, all good things come to an end. In such a situation, the home series against India will be my last series. He said that I have decided to retire from the most beautiful game. A game that has given me so much, the Cape Town Test will be my last. This is my favorite stadium in the world where I scored my first Test run and hopefully my last one too. He said that playing international cricket has always been a dream for me, but getting the opportunity to represent my country is the greatest honor for me. To have had the privilege of doing this on an international level for 12 years is beyond all my dreams. It has been an incredible journey and I have been very fortunate.
