In a firm rejection of Vladimir Putin’s invitation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has refused to travel to Moscow for talks. Zelenskyy cited the ongoing missile attacks on Ukraine as the primary reason, stating he cannot visit the capital of a nation actively attacking his own. During an interview, Zelenskyy directly challenged Putin, suggesting the Russian leader come to Kyiv if he is genuinely interested in discussions. Zelenskyy described Putin’s invitation as a political ploy, aimed at delaying negotiations. Putin had previously indicated his openness to a meeting with Zelenskyy, proposing Moscow as a potential venue, provided the meeting was well-prepared and aimed at achieving a positive outcome. Putin has maintained his objection to Ukraine joining NATO, viewing it as a threat to Russian interests, while expressing less opposition to Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Putin’s actions, accusing him of disregarding offers from various nations to host talks and deeming the Moscow proposal unacceptable. Sybiha pointed out that several countries are prepared to host a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, emphasizing the need for greater pressure to encourage Russia to engage seriously in peace negotiations.
