The prestigious World Stone Skimming Championship, an annual event in Scotland, is dealing with its first scandal in 42 years. The competition involves contestants skipping stones across water, with the farthest distance determining the winner. This year, some participants are accused of using modified stones, a practice they have acknowledged. Toss Master Matthews confirmed that certain stones had been tampered with during the competition. The motivation behind the alteration is believed to be an attempt to improve performance, possibly by rounding the stones to enhance their skipping ability. The competition is held on the Isle of Easdale, and usually features natural stones found on the island, which must meet size requirements tested by the ‘Ring of Truth.’ This year, over 2,000 individuals from 27 countries participated. The event has been running since 1993. John Jennings of Kentucky achieved a historic win with a score of 580.7 feet, the first American to do so.
