A US trade advisor has accused India of facilitating Russia’s war efforts through its purchase and refining of Russian crude oil, effectively acting as a ‘laundromat’ for the Kremlin. The advisor argued that India’s actions allow Russia to generate revenue while profiting from the trade. Simultaneously, the advisor expressed disapproval of India’s growing alignment with China. The comments come amid a backdrop of varying opinions within the US regarding India’s role on the global stage. While some, including a former US diplomat, advocate for strengthening ties with India as a strategic counterweight to China, others, such as a renowned economist, criticize the imposition of US tariffs on Indian goods. These tariffs, implemented in part due to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, have also been criticized by Russian officials. India’s External Affairs Minister has defended the nation’s actions, noting that India is not the largest consumer of Russian oil or natural gas. Moreover, the Minister emphasized that the US has previously encouraged India to purchase Russian oil to stabilize the global energy market.
