A halt on all worker visas for commercial truck drivers has been implemented by the U.S. government, as announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This action was taken in the wake of a fatal crash and the subsequent political fallout. Rubio cited the increasing number of foreign drivers on U.S. roads as a threat to American lives and the financial well-being of American truckers. The decision was made following a highway crash in Florida where a truck driver, identified as Harjinder Singh, from India, was charged with causing the deaths of three people. Singh allegedly entered the United States unlawfully from Mexico. He subsequently failed an English proficiency exam after the accident. The crash has been heavily politicized, particularly within the Republican Party, with efforts to extradite Singh led by Florida’s lieutenant governor. The situation has also drawn scrutiny due to the fact that Singh was issued his commercial license in California, a state governed by the Democratic Party. The Newsom administration pointed out Singh had a work permit issued by the federal government.
