India is witnessing a surge of economic nationalism due to growing friction with the US, particularly due to a significant 50% tariff imposed by the United States on Indian imports, spearheaded by former President Donald Trump. This has stirred considerable resentment, resulting in calls for a boycott of US businesses and products. These tariffs, which also include an additional 25% duty, are primarily directed at India’s purchase of Russian oil. American companies such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Subway, KFC, and McDonald’s are experiencing substantial pressure and fear consumer boycotts. This movement is being championed by figures like Yoga guru Ramdev, who encourages Indian citizens to avoid purchasing American goods. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated for the use of ‘swadeshi’ products, urging citizens to prioritize goods manufactured within India as a response to the tariffs.
