A significant earthquake off the coast of Russia has triggered tsunami alerts across a wide area. The quake, measuring 8.8 on the magnitude scale, hit the Kamchatka Peninsula. The initial impact included a 30 cm (12 inch) wave that reached Hokkaido, Japan. Authorities are monitoring for larger waves. Evacuations are ongoing in affected areas, including Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and parts of Japan, with tsunami warnings extending to Alaska, Hawaii, and New Zealand. A watch has also been issued for Guam and Micronesia.
