The United States’ decision to impose tariffs on India is being explained by the White House. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the tariff was implemented by former President Donald Trump as part of an effort to resolve the Russia-Ukraine dispute. According to her, Trump’s goal is to see an end to the ongoing hostilities.
The US initially imposed a 25% tariff on India. This was later increased by another 25%, effectively doubling the tariff. Currently, India is subject to a 50% tariff by the United States.
Leavitt highlighted that Trump put substantial pressure on various parties to cease the Russia-Ukraine war, including the increased tariff on India and other actions. She emphasized Trump’s consistent desire to find a resolution to the conflict.
The White House also suggested the possibility of a trilateral meeting. Leavitt stated that the former President is eager for a resolution to the conflict. Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House and encouraged him to negotiate with Putin to end the conflict. The meeting included the NATO Secretary-General and other European leaders, who agreed that Trump’s efforts were commendable. Leavitt expressed hope that the two leaders could meet to discuss ending the war following this meeting.
Leavitt pointed out that European leaders were present at the White House within 48 hours of Trump’s meeting with Putin, a result of his efforts to establish peace. She explained that the former President shared his views on a peace agreement with European leaders at the White House. They acknowledged and praised Trump’s efforts to achieve peace.
Leavitt also reiterated the claim that the war would not have started if Trump were in office. She stated that the leaders of both countries are grateful to Trump for seeking a peace agreement. She added that the previous administration didn’t make such efforts, a sentiment shared by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
