Donald Trump has communicated that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is unfeasible, before a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump suggested that Zelenskyy could choose to end the war with Russia quickly or continue the fight. Trump’s message was shared on Truth Social, where he alluded to the beginnings of the conflict, noting that Crimea was not recovered during Obama’s term and that Ukraine could not join NATO. This was issued before a meeting between the U.S., Ukrainian, and European leaders in Washington. Before this, Trump had a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15. Trump said that this meeting didn’t significantly contribute to halting the war in Ukraine. Trump advocated for a peace agreement over a ceasefire. Trump stated that Putin is open to negotiations and the onus is on Zelenskyy. The meeting in Washington will involve European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British PM Keir Starmer. Trump also held a long conversation with Zelenskyy on his way back to Washington from Alaska, followed by talks with NATO leaders.
