Donald Trump has strongly defended his use of tariffs, arguing that they were vital to protect the United States. He declared that without these tariffs, the country would face complete destruction, coupled with the obliteration of its military capabilities. These comments were made in response to a ruling by a federal appeals court, which largely invalidated the tariffs. Trump shared his views on Truth Social, where he also highlighted that one Democratic-appointed judge voted in favor of his position. The appeals court’s decision, a 7-4 split, determined that the president had overstepped his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The case now moves to the US Supreme Court, with a decision expected in the latter half of October. The Trump administration plans to appeal the ruling, and the Supreme Court will subsequently decide whether the tariffs’ implementation under the IEEPA was lawful. The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld an earlier decision by the US Court of International Trade, which had initially struck down the tariffs on May 28. The tariffs, impacting imports from various nations, including India, will remain in effect until October 14, giving the Trump administration time to pursue a Supreme Court review.
