Donald Trump has directly opposed the annexation of the West Bank by Israel, a move that has drawn a firm response from the former US President. According to reports, Trump stated, “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank,” emphasizing his rejection of the plan. This response came amid discussions with Arab leaders at a United Nations gathering. The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, described his meeting with Trump as positive, which is perceived as a win for Arab nations. Arab and Muslim leaders, during the UN General Assembly, had implored Trump to work towards ending the conflict in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, has made it clear that he will not permit a Palestinian state. Some members of his cabinet have responded to international recognition of a Palestinian state by threatening annexation of the West Bank. Trump’s comments might create pressure on Netanyahu, even though the US continues to provide military and diplomatic assistance to Israel. Trump met with eight Arab and Muslim leaders in New York, but the meeting did not result in any official public statements. Trump noted that he had a successful meeting with all the major countries except Israel and will next be meeting with Israeli officials.
