The potential end of the war in Gaza is now dependent on Hamas’s response, according to former US President Donald Trump. Trump revealed that Israel is prepared to pull back its forces, with the decision resting with Hamas. Trump indicated on Saturday that Israel has accepted a preliminary withdrawal line for Gaza, a detail conveyed to Hamas. He emphasized that a ceasefire would be immediate upon Hamas’s confirmation, followed by the exchange of prisoners.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, stated that, after discussions, Israel has approved an initial withdrawal line which has been shared with Hamas. The ceasefire and hostage exchange would start right away once Hamas gives its confirmation, followed by further discussions on the subsequent withdrawal phase.
Trump has urged Hamas to accept the peace proposal without delay, warning of consequences for any delay. He demanded that Hamas stop fighting and surrender, or the agreements would be nullified. He gave Hamas an ultimatum, setting a deadline of 6 PM on Sunday.
Hamas has shown a positive reaction to Trump’s peace offer. Yet, some disagreements remain. Hamas has consented to freeing hostages. However, the peace proposal also requires Hamas to disarm and forgo any future role in Gaza, points which Hamas is yet to agree to.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hopes that the release of all hostages could be announced in the coming days. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas are projected to begin in Egypt on Monday, though significant aspects remain undefined, including Hamas’s final decision on the proposal and how Israel’s security needs will be resolved.
Earlier, the White House press secretary re-shared a video of Trump, where he acknowledged the support of Arab nations in his Gaza crisis resolution plan.
The 20-point peace proposal by Trump involves an immediate ceasefire, an exchange of all prisoners and hostages, a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the formation of an interim government under international observation.
