In a significant diplomatic and defense announcement, President Donald Trump revealed that the United States is preparing to equip Saudi Arabia with its most advanced weaponry, including the coveted F-35 stealth fighter jets. Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum, Trump declared the Kingdom a ‘major non-NATO ally’ and announced the signing of a ‘historic strategic defence agreement.’ The President touted the unparalleled quality of American military equipment, mentioning the sale of nearly 300 tanks and various aircraft as part of a broader push to bolster Riyadh’s defense capabilities.
The enhanced military cooperation is framed by Trump as a consequence of a revitalized U.S.-Saudi partnership, especially after the successful U.S. strike against Iran’s nuclear program. He spoke with evident pride about the operation, describing it as removing a significant regional threat and prompting Iran’s potential interest in negotiations. Trump alluded to the precision of the B-2 bomber strike, highlighting its effectiveness in destroying targets deep within mountains.
Economic ties were also a focal point, with numerous ‘groundbreaking’ agreements reached in areas like civil nuclear energy, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence. Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to investing in the U.S., with a substantial $1 trillion pledge following a prior $600 billion commitment. These extensive business deals are anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities in the United States.
The diplomatic engagement was marked by a high-profile reception for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House, complete with ceremonial honors. Discussions also turned to regional stability, with the Crown Prince expressing Saudi Arabia’s willingness to support a two-state solution and peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. The planned F-35 sale to Saudi Arabia represents a notable departure from past U.S. policy, which prioritized Israel’s sole access to such cutting-edge technology, though assurances have been made regarding Israel’s continued military advantage.
