Former President Donald Trump has claimed that his use of tariffs was instrumental in resolving multiple international conflicts, stating he had ‘settled seven wars’ through trade initiatives. During an announcement concerning the US Space Command headquarters’ move to Huntsville, Alabama, Trump presented tariffs as a key negotiation tactic, emphasizing their positive impact on the US economy. He contrasted his approach with that of the Biden administration, reinforcing his stance on tariff policies. Trump emphasized the strength and significance of the United States, attributing its financial prosperity to tariffs and other related measures, which he said facilitated his negotiation prowess.
“I settled seven wars and numerous of those wars were because of trade,” Trump stated, reinforcing that tariffs provided effective negotiating advantages. He also justified the imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports, arguing that the trade relationship between the US and India had been inequitable for years, while also acknowledging that the two nations currently enjoy favorable relations.
