A new drone, barely larger than a mosquito, has been unveiled by Chinese researchers, hinting at a leap in micro-technology with potential military applications. The drone was developed at the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) in Hunan province. Micro drones have the potential to change the game across many sectors, not just in military use. The prototype, showcased on China’s military channel CCTV, features tiny wings and legs designed for stealth operations. A representative from NUDT highlighted the drone’s suitability for intelligence gathering and special battlefield missions. The drone, controlled by smartphone, mimics the size of a mosquito (around 1.3 centimeters) and includes delicate wing structures. These small drones could prove invaluable in covert military operations, surveillance, and reconnaissance efforts. They could also be deployed for search and rescue operations and environmental monitoring. While limited in payload capacity and flight duration, improvements in battery life, sensor tech, and artificial intelligence are set to enhance microdrones significantly.
