The political turmoil in Nepal was ignited by a generational movement fueled by social media’s exposure of the opulent lifestyles of the children of the elite. Driven by frustration over unemployment, inflation, and poverty, protesters, largely from Gen Z, used platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and X to showcase the lavish lives of ‘nepo kids.’ These posts, juxtaposing expensive cars, designer clothes, and foreign travel with the struggles of the common populace, sparked widespread outrage. Shringhala Khatiwada, daughter of a former health minister, faced the burning of her house after her lifestyle was highlighted. Shivana Shrestha, singer and daughter-in-law of a former Prime Minister, and Smita Dahal, the granddaughter of a former Prime Minister, also became targets of criticism for flaunting luxury items. The protests escalated to include the burning of leaders’ residences, symbolizing the public’s anger over perceived inequality and corruption. The army’s imposition of a curfew and the government’s dissolution highlight the depth of the crisis, with Nepal grappling with political instability and the need for systemic change.
