Authorities are on high alert in Dhaka following the discovery of a plot targeting the US Embassy. Intelligence reports indicated a planned attack, including potential kidnapping and murder of embassy staff and a religious figure. The attack was thwarted, leading to the arrest of Shamin Mahfuz, associated with Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya. The terrorists, reportedly linked to Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), conducted surveillance near the embassy under the guise of cricket. The US government immediately initiated discussions with the Bangladeshi government in response to the threat. Meetings were held with key officials to enhance security cooperation, focusing on counter-terrorism, law enforcement, and online safety.
Shamin Mahfuz, apprehended by RAB-11, has a history of terrorist involvement, with prior arrests. He is currently accused of ties to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Several accomplices have also been charged, facing allegations of receiving training in Afghanistan and Pakistan for jihadist activities.
The US Embassy is working with the Bangladesh police to establish a special force under SPEAR to ensure rapid response capabilities to protect the embassy and its personnel.
