Sources indicate that a rift has emerged in Pakistan’s political landscape, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif allegedly expressing concerns over the growing influence of Army Chief Asim Munir. This situation has been fueled by Asif’s recent series of three controversial statements, which have targeted the government and senior political figures. The remarks have drawn criticism and placed a spotlight on the Defense Minister. These statements have specifically aimed at Pakistani government officials and key PML-N leaders. On Thursday, the situation took a dramatic turn when Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi demanded Asif’s resignation within the National Assembly, due to the ongoing controversial remarks. Abbasi suggested that resignation would be more appropriate than continuing to make statements against the government. Khawaja Asif, a veteran leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), has been a prominent figure in Pakistani politics for around four decades. He was appointed to lead the defense department under Shehbaz Sharif’s government, however, he now seems to be less involved. The Army Chief is now accompanying the Prime Minister on official visits.
Asif’s Controversial Statements:
1. Regarding the recent floods, Khawaja Asif blamed a corrupt system. He stated that Pakistani contractors had encroached on land with the government’s support, leading to improper drainage. He criticized those blaming India for the floods, claiming that the country’s infrastructure was weak, with India having no fault.
2. Khawaja Asif criticized Pakistan’s bureaucracy, stating that officials were stealing money to build houses in Portugal. As a result, the National Assembly launched an investigation. Asif put the blame on the system’s inability to prevent corruption.
3. The Defence Minister also criticized Maryam Nawaz, claiming the provincial governments were not performing well and even described the floods as a ‘blessing from Allah’. He suggested people should collect the floodwater.
