A recent interview with Syria’s interim President Al-Shara has revealed a stunning claim: Russia secretly collaborated with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This alleged deal facilitated HTS’s capture of Damascus and the subsequent removal of Assad from power. The interview, conducted a year after the events, exposes that the betrayal originated from Vladimir Putin, Assad’s close ally. Al-Shara explained that HTS, supported by Russia, took control of Damascus. The revelation was made on the state-run Al-Ikhbariyah TV channel. During the interview, Al-Shara asserted that his forces had initiated secret talks with Russia concurrently with HTS’s operation to depose Assad. Al-Shara recounted that on November 27, his forces faced little opposition, swiftly taking Aleppo. They then advanced towards Hama, a key city en route to Damascus. Al-Shara stated that their forces were in communication with Russia during this campaign. He further added that Russia did not participate in the fighting as HTS moved towards Homs. As per the agreement, Assad had to leave the country on December 8 and Al-Shara’s forces seized Damascus. Al-Shara also mentioned that his forces intentionally avoided attacking the Russian airbase near Jabla to foster strong relations with Russia. He underscored Russia’s global importance and its membership in the Security Council, highlighting the importance of maintaining the historical bond between Syria and Russia. Following Al-Shara’s assumption of power, there has been speculation regarding his political affiliations. This recent disclosure suggests he’s aiming to balance the interests of his country with both superpowers. Putin’s forces are making their return to Syria after a nine-month absence, a move that could be seen as a strategic blow to the United States and Turkey. The Russian military entered Syria through Kamishli airport. Al-Shara’s government had extended an invitation to Russian forces, hoping their presence would prevent Syria’s fragmentation.
