Parliamentary elections are scheduled to occur in Syria this Sunday. This event is historic as it’s the first election since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad. The Assad regime fell in December 2024 due to a swift rebel attack, concluding the five-decade-long Assad family’s reign. Currently, the interim government is under the leadership of Ahmad al-Shara.
These elections are regarded as a pivotal move towards establishing democracy in Syria. Nevertheless, the process will be indirect, with the public not having direct voting rights. Astonishingly, many Syrian citizens are oblivious to the fact that these elections are happening in their nation.
