Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has articulated a vision for closer collaboration with India, focusing on robust trade links, enhanced maritime security, and the development of sustainable livelihoods. Addressing an India Foundation event, she emphasized Sri Lanka’s dedication to fostering a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region, open to all nations. Amarasuriya candidly discussed the existing challenges within the bilateral ties, particularly the sensitive issue of Indian fishermen’s activities in Sri Lankan waters, which negatively impacts local livelihoods. She advocated for a resolution that is both sensitive and sustainable, stressing the importance of constructive dialogue. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the maturity of the India-Sri Lanka relationship, highlighting the shared commitment to addressing differences with empathy and mutual respect. Sri Lanka aspires to be a significant maritime hub, offering cost-effective trade routes for India’s international commerce through its well-positioned ports. Amarasuriya suggested that Sri Lanka could serve as a strategic partner in India’s pursuit of its ‘Viksit Bharat’ objectives. She called for continued joint efforts in maritime security, including tackling drug trafficking, piracy, and promoting regional energy security through renewable energy projects. The Prime Minister underscored that collective action is essential to address common regional threats and ensure a future based on collaboration and international law. Furthermore, Amarasuriya recognized India’s indispensable role in Sri Lanka’s economic resurgence, referencing the foundational India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement and expressing eagerness to strengthen economic ties further. She proposed exploring opportunities for Sri Lanka to integrate into India’s manufacturing and service sector value chains, potentially acting as a complementary production center for industries like textiles, electronics, and food processing, aligning with the ‘Viksit Bharat’ strategy.
