Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has articulated a clear vision for deepening bilateral ties with India, focusing on robust cooperation in trade, maritime security, and economic development. Speaking at a civic reception, she underscored Sri Lanka’s commitment to a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region where all nations can thrive. Acknowledging the complexities surrounding the fishermen’s issue, Amarasuriya emphasized the need for empathetic dialogue and sustainable solutions to address concerns over Indian fishermen’s activities in Sri Lankan waters. She noted that the maturity of the India-Sri Lanka relationship is demonstrated by its ability to constructively manage differences. Sri Lanka is keen to develop as a significant maritime hub, offering a cost-effective gateway for India’s international trade through its strategically located ports. This strategic alignment, the Prime Minister believes, can significantly contribute to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ objectives. Collaboration on critical maritime security issues, including combating drug trafficking and piracy, is paramount for mutual benefit. Furthermore, Sri Lanka aims to integrate into India’s growing manufacturing and service sectors, potentially serving as a complementary production base and strengthening the economic partnership established by the existing free trade agreement.
