Tensions have resurfaced following an alleged harassment incident involving an Indian citizen at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Prema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian national originating from Arunachal Pradesh, reported that Chinese immigration officers questioned her citizenship and asserted that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to China. She described an extended period of distress, lasting approximately 18 hours, before receiving assistance from Indian diplomatic missions. In response to these claims, China has issued a denial. Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that the traveler’s “lawful rights and interests were fully protected” and that no “compulsory measures” were taken. This statement comes after India lodged a strong official protest, known as a demarche, with Chinese representatives. Thongdok detailed her experience, including officials allegedly mocking her and deeming her Indian passport invalid due to her origin from Arunachal Pradesh. She stated that while transiting from London to Japan, she was singled out and subjected to remarks questioning her nationality. China, however, maintains its official stance on the region’s sovereignty, with the spokesperson reiterating that China considers “Zangnan” its territory and does not recognize the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. The Chinese authorities claim their immigration procedures were conducted according to law and regulations. India has firmly reiterated its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, calling the detention grounds “ludicrous” and highlighting that its citizens hold valid travel documents. The incident adds a layer of complexity to the evolving relationship between India and China.
