The world of politics is mourning the loss of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80 in Koothattukulam, Kerala, after suffering a sudden heart attack. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a touching tribute to Odinga, referring to him as a “cherished friend of India” and recalling their long-standing personal relationship that dates back to Modi’s time as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Odinga was in Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment when the tragic incident occurred during his morning walk. He was promptly taken to Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre, but sadly, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. His body is currently at Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam. PM Modi shared on X that he had the honor of knowing Odinga intimately over the years, emphasizing Odinga’s “special affection for India, our culture, values and ancient wisdom.” The former Kenyan leader had a deep admiration for India’s rich heritage and traditional healing practices, particularly Ayurveda, which he saw positively impact his daughter’s health. This connection, Modi noted, fueled Odinga’s commitment to enhancing India-Kenya ties. The Prime Minister extended his sincere condolences to Odinga’s grieving family, friends, and the Kenyan nation. Odinga had been in India for six days with his family, adhering to a treatment and wellness regimen. The heart attack reportedly struck around 6:30 a.m. while he was out for a walk, and he was brought to the hospital in critical condition. A significant figure in Kenyan politics for over four decades, Odinga served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, a period marked by crucial national reconciliation and constitutional reform. Known for his powerful advocacy and widespread public support, he was a central architect of modern Kenyan democracy. His leadership was instrumental in brokering the power-sharing deal that ended the post-election violence of 2007–08, advocating for peace and reform. Odinga, a prominent opposition leader and former head of the Orange Democratic Movement, was a consistent contender in presidential elections and a leading voice in Kenyan public life. His career, though marked by robust political competition, was always geared towards building a more unified and equitable society. Kenya’s Embassy in New Delhi has been informed and is facilitating arrangements with Kerala authorities for the return of his body. The news has elicited widespread shock and sorrow from local leaders and the Kenyan diaspora.
