Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Poudel, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, dissolved the House of Representatives, as per an official announcement. The dissolution took effect at 11:00 PM on September 12, 2025. New elections are scheduled for March 21, 2026. Sushila Karki, who previously served as Chief Justice, was sworn in as Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the office in Nepal. She will lead an interim government. This development follows a period of political instability. The former Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, resigned amid youth protests against corruption allegations and restrictions on social media. President Poudel, before making the decision, consulted with various political figures, legal experts, and civil society representatives. The appointment of Karki was met with celebrations among the Gen Z population, who gathered outside the President’s office in Kathmandu. Baburam Bhattarai, a former Prime Minister, attended the swearing-in ceremony. The outgoing Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, resigned due to the widespread protests led by the Gen Z group. The protests were largely fueled by discontent over corruption, perceived bias, and the limitations imposed on social media platforms. Tragic incidents during these protests resulted in the deaths of at least 51 people, including an Indian national. The newly appointed Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, is tasked with organizing the new parliamentary elections within a six-month timeframe. The oath-taking ceremony included the Chief Justice of Nepal, senior government officials, security heads, and members of the diplomatic community.
