Before his scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday. This marked the second instance of communication between the two leaders via telephone in the month of August.
In his address regarding the discussion with Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian leader for the call. He then reiterated India’s steadfast backing for the restoration of peace between Russia and Ukraine.
On the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi shared, “We discussed the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian dimensions, and the steps being taken to reinstate peace and stability. India is fully supportive of all endeavors aimed at achieving this goal.”
This dialogue took place a day prior to Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit in China. A prior phone conversation between Prime Minister Modi and Volodymyr Zelenskyy occurred on August 11.
During the discussion, President Zelenskyy presented his perspectives on the recent developments tied to the Ukraine conflict. The Prime Minister’s Office released a statement, noting, “The Prime Minister conveyed his appreciation to President Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s consistent and unwavering commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, along with efforts to rapidly restore peace. The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s dedication to offering all possible assistance in this endeavor.”
Prime Minister Modi and President Zelenskyy also assessed the advancements within the India-Ukraine bilateral partnership. They considered strategies to “further strengthen collaboration across all areas of mutual interest.” They mutually agreed to maintain continuous communication.
Zelenskyy stated that he shared information on the talks held with President Trump in Washington. He noted it was a valuable and significant exchange. Ukraine confirmed its readiness for a meeting with Russia’s leader.
Zelenskyy mentioned that they coordinated their positions ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. He emphasized the necessity of concluding the war with an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of lasting peace, a stance universally recognized and supported. He highlighted the impossibility of engaging in constructive peace discussions while cities and communities face ongoing shelling. India’s willingness to undertake essential efforts and provide appropriate signals to Russia and other leaders during summit-related meetings was also highlighted. Discussions also encompassed their bilateral ties, the preparation for reciprocal visits, and the organization of a joint inter-governmental commission meeting.
