The central Philippines is currently experiencing the brunt of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which made landfall from the Pacific Ocean late Sunday night. The powerful storm has resulted in at least one confirmed fatality, widespread flooding, and significant power disruptions. In a proactive measure, more than 150,000 residents were safely evacuated from eastern provinces prior to the typhoon’s arrival. Officials had issued stark warnings about the impending torrential rains, destructive winds, and potential storm surges of up to 3 meters.
By Monday mid-morning, Typhoon Kalmaegi was moving over Sagay in Negros Occidental province, boasting sustained winds of 150 kph and gusts up to 185 kph. Its initial landfall occurred near midnight in Silago, Southern Leyte. This event signifies the 20th tropical cyclone to traverse the Philippines in the current year.
Tragically, an elderly individual lost their life due to flooding in Southern Leyte, where authorities also confirmed a province-wide power failure. Kalmaegi, characterized by a broad wind field spanning approximately 600 km, is forecast to continue its northwest trajectory, eventually heading towards the South China Sea. The impact on areas like Cebu, still recovering from a major earthquake, is a significant concern.
