Peter Navarro has sharply condemned India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia, alleging that it directly benefits Russia’s war in Ukraine. He argues that India is using US dollars to purchase discounted Russian crude oil, effectively funneling funds into the Russian President’s war chest. Navarro criticized India’s trade practices, stating that while the US is providing aid to Ukraine, India is financially supporting Russia and simultaneously imposing high tariffs on US goods. He noted the dramatic increase in Russian oil imports by India, from less than 1% to over 30%, and alleged that Indian refiners are profiting from the discounted oil by refining it and exporting it to various regions, thus potentially circumventing sanctions. Navarro further pointed out that the US faces a substantial trade deficit with India and accused the previous administration of overlooking these issues. He also highlighted India’s continued purchase of Russian weaponry, suggesting that this, along with the oil trade, represents a form of strategic advantage. Navarro’s statements indicate a call for a change in US policy towards India, aiming to curb what he perceives as detrimental practices.
