Nepal’s New Interim PM, Sushila Karki, Begins Term at Singha Durbar

On September 14, Sushila Karki officially took office as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister at Singha Durbar. She began her day at 11 am at the Home Ministry building, which serves as the PM’s office. She steps into this role amidst a period of political turmoil and disapproval from the opposition. A meeting was held in her presence with the Chief Secretary and all ministry secretaries to discuss expanding the cabinet, and announcements regarding appointments are expected soon. Karki stated after taking charge that any individuals implicated in acts of vandalism would be investigated, and that she and her team were not seeking power, but instead planned to serve for approximately six months before transferring authority to the new parliament. She also stated the need for public backing. Further, she declared that the victims of the September 8 events would be recognized as martyrs and provided with one million each, the government covering the costs of the injured and assisting with the movement of remains from Kathmandu. Karki’s appointment is a result of major demonstrations driven by Gen Z, protesting accusations of corruption against the previous Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s Government. Karki, who took the oath of office on Saturday at Sheetal Niwas in Kathmandu, is the first woman to hold the Interim Prime Minister position. Nepal’s Parliament was formally dissolved late Friday, September 12, 2025, with new elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. Her selection reflects a rare moment of consensus and was facilitated through a public vote on Discord, making her a significant figure for the younger generation of Nepalese citizens seeking stability.
