Gen Z in Morocco, similar to the situation in Nepal, has initiated protests, growing in momentum since late September. This wave of dissent, spearheaded by the younger generation, now demands the government’s removal, with demonstrators seeking the King’s intervention to dissolve the current administration. These protests have unfortunately led to three deaths. The youth-led group GenZ 212 is at the forefront, advocating for the government’s resignation, citing grievances such as rampant corruption, inadequate healthcare, and the need for better education and employment opportunities. Their frustration has grown to the point where they are now directly calling for the government’s removal. In response to the demonstrations, the government has stated it is prepared to address the social concerns of the youth and engage in dialogue. The protests began with a focus on peaceful demonstrations. However, the police’s forceful actions on Tuesday and Wednesday led to violence and destruction, resulting in casualties. GenZ 212 released a statement, directly addressing King Mohammed VI, and demanding the dissolution of the current government. The group believes the government has failed to uphold the constitutional rights of Moroccans and address their pressing social needs. Furthermore, the group is demanding a transparent judicial process to hold those involved in corruption accountable. Health Minister Amine Tahraoui acknowledged in Parliament on Wednesday that progress in healthcare, despite reforms, has been insufficient. Housing Minister Fatima Zahra Mansouri also admitted to governmental shortcomings, stating that if the government had succeeded, the protests wouldn’t be occurring.
