Bangladesh is preparing for general elections next year in February, as declared by the interim government led by Professor Mohammad Yunus. In response, the Election Commission has devised a new plan focused on reinforcing law and order during the upcoming elections. This plan suggests integrating the army, navy, and air force into the law enforcement framework.
The EC approved the amendment proposal to the RPO (Representation of the People Order) during a meeting held on Monday. If this amendment is enacted, it would eliminate the necessity for a separate order to authorize these forces’ roles in the election. This would empower the military personnel to carry out duties at polling stations, akin to the police, and make arrests without warrants.
