Facing evolving aerial threats, India is poised to significantly expand its air defence capabilities with a proposed acquisition of five more S-400 air defence missile systems. This substantial defence package, estimated at approximately Rs 56,000 crore, is anticipated to be finalized during the bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The S-400 systems, renowned for their advanced capabilities, have become a cornerstone of India’s aerial defence strategy. Following the delivery of three out of five previously ordered squadrons, with the remaining two slated for 2026, this new order would effectively double India’s S-400 fleet. This expansion is crucial for maintaining air superiority and deterring potential threats, especially in light of recent geopolitical events. The comprehensive agreement may also encompass the procurement of additional missiles and the establishment of local maintenance facilities, reinforcing India’s long-term defence ties with Russia while it navigates complex international relations and seeks to balance its partnerships.
