In response to escalating protests, President Donald Trump has ordered an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles, as confirmed by the Department of Defence. Their mission is to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and federal law enforcement. This action supplements the initial deployment of 2,000 troops announced on Saturday. Sean Parnell, representing the Department of Defence, confirmed the mobilization, stating its purpose is to support ICE operations and enable federal law enforcement to safely carry out their duties. The latest troop deployment comes as California challenged the Trump administration’s actions in court, arguing the deployments are unconstitutional. The White House criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for suing the administration, suggesting he should focus on prosecuting those protesting ICE. California Attorney General Rob Bonta condemned Trump’s decision to federalize the state’s National Guard, labelling it as a violation of the Constitution and federal law, and highlighting that it was done without Governor Newsom’s consent and against local law enforcement’s preferences. Governor Newsom has also voiced strong disapproval, accusing Trump of using the situation to instigate fear and undermine the Constitution. The protests were prompted by ICE raids and the subsequent detention of undocumented immigrants.
