In a meeting at the White House, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung engaged in a conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Lee injected humor into the discussion, expressing his wish for a future meeting between Trump and Kim Jong Un, potentially leading to a ‘Trump Tower’ in North Korea and joint golf sessions. He acknowledged Trump’s diplomatic efforts with Kim Jong Un, suggesting Trump’s leadership was key to global advancement.
Trump responded favorably, congratulating Lee and expressing strong support. The meeting also touched upon the decorations of the Oval Office, which Lee viewed as a sign of America’s economic and future prosperity. Trump also conveyed his interest in another meeting with Kim Jong Un, reflecting on the positive nature of their prior interactions. This comes as North Korea conducted missile tests and declined dialogue with South Korea.
Lee gifted Trump with a golf putter, cowboy hats inscribed with the ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan, and a model of a turtle ship. Despite the friendly exchange, significant disagreements persisted on matters such as defense spending, the presence of U.S. troops, and trade tariffs. Substantial investments from South Korean firms in the U.S. were announced, including major orders from Korean Air and investment increases from Hyundai. However, a 15% tariff on South Korean products remained in effect, and Trump indicated it would be difficult to remove. Lee also highlighted the escalating nuclear capabilities of North Korea, noting the potential for the annual production of numerous nuclear weapons. U.S. authorities have confirmed concerns about North Korea’s progress on hypersonic and multi-warhead missile technology.
