Ali Larijani, a key figure in Iran’s political establishment, visited Beirut, sparking discussions about Iran’s influence in Lebanon. Larijani’s visit included meetings with Hezbollah representatives and Lebanese government officials. President Joseph Aoun’s statements during their meeting highlighted the intricacies of the relationship.
Iran’s backing of Hezbollah has been a consistent factor in Lebanon’s political landscape for years, generating both support and opposition within the country. President Aoun acknowledged Lebanon’s desire for cooperation with Iran, but emphasized the importance of sovereignty, friendship, and mutual respect. He also expressed dissatisfaction with certain recent statements made by Iranian officials.
Aoun made it clear that Lebanon’s relationship with Iran should not be exclusive to specific factions, but inclusive of all Lebanese citizens. He underscored Lebanon’s role as a shared homeland for all its people, regardless of their religious affiliation, and emphasized the state’s duty to ensure the security of all communities through its institutions.
Rejecting external interference, Aoun asserted that Lebanon’s internal affairs should remain free from outside influence. He called for stability within Lebanon for the benefit of all citizens.
He warned against the dangers of internal divisions, particularly when fueled by foreign support. He stated that no party or group should resort to arms or rely on external powers.
Aoun further emphasized that the Lebanese Armed Forces are the primary guardians of the nation’s security. He framed threats, whether from Israel or other sources, as challenges for the entire nation, not just a single group, and advocated for unity as the most potent response.
Larijani extended greetings from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and extended an invitation for President Aoun to visit Tehran. He expressed Iran’s commitment to aiding Lebanon’s reconstruction and bolstering ties with the Lebanese people across all sectors. He commended President Aoun’s efforts in promoting national unity and inter-community harmony.
