The recent conflict, lasting 12 days, saw the reported elimination of several key figures close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by Israel. Among those killed were prominent military leaders and officials, creating a void in the leadership. This prompted speculation within Tehran regarding Khamenei’s next moves and who would fill the positions of influence. In response, Khamenei announced a list of three individuals who would represent him on the National Security Council.
The National Security Council is the primary body in Iran’s government, making crucial decisions that require the Supreme Leader’s final approval. The council was reorganized following the recent events. Khamenei’s appointments to the Security Council are seen as a reflection of his closest allies, who will now act as his voice in the council’s proceedings.
The three individuals selected by Khamenei are Ali Larijani, Ali Shamkhani, and Ahmadian. Larijani, a known hardliner, has previously served as a representative to the Security Council and held the position of secretary. He is considered to be favored by Khamenei and is now returning to a prominent role. Shamkhani, a reformist, also survived an attack and has held previous roles in the Security Council, including secretary and defense minister. Ahmadian, until recently the Secretary of the Security Council, is a trusted confidant of Khamenei with extensive experience in defense and military affairs, including service during the Iran-Iraq War.
