Iran has declared that any dialogue with the United States is contingent upon Washington providing a ‘credible guarantee’ against future attacks by the US and Israel. Iranian Ambassador to India, Dr. Iraj Elahi, outlined the country’s position in an interview, stressing that without such assurances, negotiations would be futile. The ambassador referenced military operations carried out last month as the basis for this demand.
These operations included an Israeli operation in June, targeting nuclear sites and military facilities, and US strikes later in the month, also focused on Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Iran views these actions as violations of international law and the UN Charter. Elahi emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program is peaceful and that the attacks were illegal and lacked justification.
He also accused the US and Israel of undermining diplomacy and highlighted the deaths of scientists, military figures, and civilians resulting from the attacks. Elahi stated that for diplomacy to be productive, the US must commit to preventing future aggression. The envoy reiterated Iran’s commitment to the NPT, but criticized the politicization of the IAEA.
