Following intervention from Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Iran has agreed to a US-backed ceasefire with Israel. Al Thani secured Tehran’s approval through direct communication with Iranian officials. This was preceded by a message from former US President Donald Trump to the Emir of Qatar, indicating Israel’s acceptance of the ceasefire and requesting Qatar’s diplomatic efforts.
The talks occurred after Iran’s missile attacks on US military bases in Qatar and Iraq. Trump later announced an agreement on social media for a ‘complete and total’ ceasefire, slated to begin in approximately six hours. He explained that Iran would initiate the ceasefire, followed by Israel. He urged both nations to maintain peace and respect throughout the process. Trump congratulated both countries for ending what he called ‘The 12 Day War’.
The events unfolded after Israel’s airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, leading to Iran’s retaliatory actions against Israeli targets. Escalation continued with US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which prompted Iran’s missile attacks on US bases.
