Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt – FIFA President Gianni Infantino was a notable attendee at a recent summit focused on peace in Gaza, standing alongside US President Donald Trump. The presence of the head of world football’s governing body surprised many, as the event was primarily anticipated to involve political leaders.
Explaining his attendance, Infantino shared that President Trump extended a personal invitation. “FIFA is here to help, to assist and to put ourselves at disposal for whatever we can do to make sure that this peace process comes to fruition,” Infantino stated. This marks a significant moment for Infantino, who has increasingly addressed the Israeli-Gaza conflict.
Last week, Infantino called for football to contribute to Middle East peace, especially with World Cup qualifiers involving Israel approaching. He also lauded the recent US-brokered ceasefire, highlighting Trump’s instrumental role and suggesting he be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize.
During the summit, Infantino positioned football as a powerful tool for hope and rebuilding in Gaza. He pledged FIFA’s comprehensive support for restoring the region’s football infrastructure. This support includes rebuilding pitches, providing equipment, offering coaching, and creating a dedicated fund for Palestinian football development. “Football brings hope to children, and it is very, very important,” he reiterated.
The FIFA President and former President Trump have cultivated a relationship over several years, marked by public engagements. Their connection, initiated in 2018, has continued with joint appearances and private meetings, including a recent presentation of a World Cup trophy replica. Infantino’s move to Miami is seen as a strategic step to maintain proximity for future interactions, particularly with the 2026 World Cup preparations.
