A delegation of special envoys from the Republic of Korea (RoK), headed by former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum, met with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday to discuss enhancing collaboration between the two countries. The discussions covered key sectors including economy, technology, defense, maritime security, and people-to-people exchanges. Jaishankar shared details of the meeting on his official X account, emphasizing the importance of economic, technological, defense, and maritime cooperation, as well as expanding people-to-people exchanges. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts by both India and South Korea to boost cooperation in areas such as green hydrogen, shipbuilding, investment, semiconductors, and regional security, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Prior to the visit, Indian Ambassador to South Korea Amit Kumar engaged with Kim Boo-kyum. The South Korean delegation included Representative Lee Kai Ho and Democratic Party of Korea’s Supreme Council Member Song Sun-ho. During the interaction, both sides examined the Special Strategic Partnership and explored ways to strengthen ties in areas such as peace, prosperity, and regional connectivity. This meeting followed a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in Canada last month. The leaders agreed to work together on trade, investment, green energy, and emerging technology. Initiatives like Korea Plus have been launched to promote Korean investments in India, and a Korea-India SME and Start-up Centre was established in Gurugram in 2019. As of June 2023, South Korea’s total foreign direct investment (FDI) in India was USD 8.02 billion.
