A significant crackdown on alleged H-1B visa program abuse is underway in the United States, with the Department of Labor launching over 175 investigations. The program, designed to bring in skilled foreign professionals for in-demand roles, is now under intense scrutiny to ensure it doesn’t disadvantage American workers. This move is part of a concerted effort to reform immigration policies and bolster domestic employment. Launched in September, ‘Project Firewall’ by the DOL is dedicated to verifying that companies adhere to H-1B rules and do not hire foreign workers at lower wages to replace equally qualified Americans. In an unprecedented step, Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is personally overseeing the certification of these investigations. “The Labor Department is using every resource at our disposal to put a stop to H-1B visa abuse,” Chavez-DeRemer affirmed, emphasizing her direct involvement in protecting American jobs. The department has also rolled out a public awareness campaign, including a video, that critically examines how the H-1B visa is allegedly being used by some firms to substitute younger American employees with less expensive foreign labor, with India frequently cited as the leading recipient nation. The campaign’s message is clear: the system’s exploitation is costing Americans their jobs and their dream.
