The Israeli army has intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla en route to Gaza, detaining activists including climate activist Greta Thunberg. The flotilla was attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been ongoing for 18 years. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on X that the ships were safely stopped and the passengers were being transported to an Israeli port. They also stated that Thunberg and her fellow activists were in good condition. The ministry released a video showing Thunberg. Israel has not provided evidence to substantiate claims that the flotilla is connected to Hamas. Activists have labeled the Israeli actions as illegal, calling on the international community to take action. They emphasized their mission to deliver humanitarian aid, not weapons, to the people of Gaza. Israeli media reported that six boats have been intercepted, including the Alma. More interceptions are anticipated. Israeli soldiers boarded the ships and detained numerous activists. The Freedom Flotilla II was launched in 2011, a continuation of the 2010 Gaza Freedom Flotilla. The goal of this flotilla, composed of international activists and NGOs, was to breach the Israeli blockade and provide humanitarian assistance. Previous flotillas have not reached Gaza. This latest flotilla was also intended for the same purpose.
