The Israeli Navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission aiming to deliver aid to Gaza. The flotilla, carrying activists from various nations, was stopped at sea. Among those detained was Greta Thunberg, the Swedish environmental activist. Following the interception, the Israeli Foreign Ministry released a statement assuring the safety of all individuals, who were being taken to an Israeli port. This event unfolds amidst a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with the UN raising alarms about widespread famine and malnutrition.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, considered the largest maritime aid operation, commenced on August 31, 2025, from Spain, with planned stops in Italy, Greece, and Tunisia. The mission involved over 50 vessels carrying participants, including activists, parliamentarians, and social workers, representing 44 countries. More than 500 people were on board, including prominent figures like Greta Thunberg, Mandla Mandela, and Italian parliamentarians. A group of 24 American activists and military veterans also joined the initiative. The primary goal of the flotilla was to challenge the ongoing Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, which has been in place for 18 years, and deliver essential humanitarian supplies such as food, water, and medical aid.
Throughout its journey, the flotilla faced obstacles. Activists reported that some ships were targeted by drone attacks near Malta and Crete, causing damage. Despite these setbacks, around 44 ships managed to reach the eastern Mediterranean. Spain and Italy deployed warships to monitor the flotilla and offer support. Governments across Europe and other regions urged all parties to exercise restraint.
Israeli naval forces surrounded the flotilla approximately 130 kilometers offshore on Wednesday. According to reports, Israeli ships utilized bright lights and water cannons before boarding and taking control of the vessels.
Israel had previously advised the activists to use the Ashkelon port for aid inspection and distribution. However, the flotilla continued towards Gaza. Israel has alleged connections between the flotilla and Hamas, claiming security concerns. The organizers maintain that the mission is purely humanitarian, with the aim of delivering relief to the people of Gaza.
The Israeli blockade of Gaza has been in place since 2007, following Hamas’s takeover. The blockade was further tightened after the October 2023 Hamas attacks and the subsequent conflict.
