A grave concern has been raised over Bangladesh’s security landscape, with Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asserting that the nation has become a sanctuary for terrorists. Wazed claims that Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is operating openly, and crucially, that recent terror attacks in Delhi have connections to militants based in Bangladesh. He highlighted the release of thousands of previously imprisoned militants by the current government, amplifying the threat.
According to Wazed, the local branch of LeT is deeply involved in orchestrating attacks, including those targeting Delhi. This development signals a worrying transformation of Bangladesh’s role in regional security. He also pointed to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) as the source of weapons used by militants who participated in violent protests last year, a claim supported by visual evidence.
On the legal front, Wazed decried the ongoing proceedings against his mother, Sheikh Hasina, as politically motivated. He cited the dismissal of judges, unlawful legislative changes, and the obstruction of her legal defense as evidence of a flawed justice system, rendering any extradition moot. He credited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his mother’s safe passage out of Bangladesh, averting a planned assassination.
Wazed also condemned the prolonged rule of an unelected government, asserting that its tenure has been characterized by undemocratic practices. While acknowledging past corruption, he maintained that Bangladesh witnessed substantial progress under Sheikh Hasina’s governance. The implications for India are significant as it grapples with the potential for increased terrorist activity originating from its neighbor.
