The government of Bangladesh has communicated that it is still awaiting India’s official reply concerning the extradition of its former Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. Hasina received a death sentence after being found guilty of crimes against humanity related to the July-August 2024 unrest. Dhaka had formally lodged the extradition request with India just last week, following the legal pronouncements against her.
M Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, indicated that Dhaka anticipates New Delhi’s action, stressing that the judicial conclusion and Hasina’s conviction represent a significant development. The Ministry of External Affairs in Bangladesh referenced the bilateral extradition treaty, pointing out India’s ‘binding duty’ to cooperate in repatriating the convicted fugitive.
In its correspondence, Bangladesh’s foreign ministry underscored that providing refuge to those convicted of crimes against humanity would be viewed as a hostile gesture and an insult to justice. The authorities urged India to swiftly deport and transfer both Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to face justice in Bangladesh, reiterating the treaty’s mandate.
India had previously responded by acknowledging the verdict and pledging constructive engagement to uphold the welfare of the Bangladeshi population, including fostering peace and stability within the nation.
