Strengthening bilateral cooperation across pivotal sectors was the central theme during Secretary (South) Neena Malhotra’s recent official visit to Jordan. Meeting with Secretary General Daifallah Ali Al-Fayez and Ambassador Mohammed Abu Wendi of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on October 13th, Malhotra engaged in constructive dialogues aimed at enhancing the already robust India-Jordan relationship. This visit, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties, saw a comprehensive review of political, economic, trade, defense, and cultural cooperation, alongside people-to-people connections. Both countries reaffirmed their dedication to nurturing their friendly relations and expanding collaboration. Discussions also extended to pressing regional and global developments, with a consensus on the importance of peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. The officials committed to maintaining regular communication and scheduled the next Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi. Secretary Malhotra also connected with members of the Indian diaspora, the business community, academia, and cultural groups, acknowledging their role in fostering stronger India-Jordan ties. The prospect of a Twinship Agreement between the historic cities of Agra and Petra was also on the agenda. This engagement builds upon earlier discussions that underscored a steady momentum in the bilateral partnership, focusing on political-security, economic, and developmental cooperation. A series of commemorative events are planned to mark the 75th year of diplomatic relations. The two nations also discussed trade and investment, with bilateral trade reaching USD 2.8 billion in 2023-24, positioning India as Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner. Efforts will continue to diversify economic ties and encourage mutual investments, including support for institutions like the India-Jordan Centre of Excellence in IT.
