A shooting in Jerusalem claimed the lives of at least five people and left twelve others injured after assailants opened fire on a bus. The attack happened on Monday at a busy junction in northern Jerusalem, on a road leading to Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem. Police confirmed that the attackers targeted individuals at a bus stop. Some reports suggest that gunmen also entered a crowded bus and fired shots. Video footage revealed commuters fleeing the scene as gunfire erupted near a bus stop. Emergency responders described a chaotic scene with widespread broken glass and numerous unconscious victims on the road and sidewalk. The deceased included one woman and four men. Initial reports indicate that at least two gunmen participated in the attack. According to the AFP news agency, Magen David Adom stated they received reports of approximately fifteen injuries resulting from gunfire at the Ramot Junction in Jerusalem. The shooting unfolded a few hours after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz issued an ultimatum to Hamas, threatening annihilation if they did not surrender their weapons. The videos showed people running away from the scene during the morning rush hour. The area was filled with panic and disarray. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir were at the scene shortly after the event. Hamas hailed the attack but did not claim responsibility. The shooting comes amid rising violence in Israel and the occupied West Bank since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing conflict in Gaza. Health officials reported that six people in Gaza died from famine and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, increasing the total deaths from malnutrition to 393, including 140 children. The world’s leading hunger organization declared a famine in Gaza last month.
