The Bangladesh Election Commission’s recent decision to exclude the lotus symbol from the electoral list has sparked controversy. This move comes as the country prepares for general elections in February 2026, following a change in government. The NCP, led by Nahid Islam, had requested the lotus symbol for its party. The commission’s explanation is that the symbol is not on the list, therefore, they cannot provide it. The lotus, known as ‘Shapla’ in Bangladesh, holds significance as the national flower, and its exclusion is seen as a strategic move.
The NCP has responded with a statement questioning how the commission can conduct elections without the lotus symbol and issued a warning against the alleged plot.
