A scandal has erupted in China after a surgeon was found to have neglected a patient’s care in order to defend his girlfriend, a junior doctor. During the incident, the patient remained anesthetized for more than 40 minutes. The surgeon was subsequently fired, and investigations revealed a series of concerning actions. Disciplinary measures were taken against 19 officials from five prominent institutions. The junior doctor involved also had her license revoked. Furthermore, the National Health Commission (NHC) has ordered changes to the 4+4 program, which allows non-medical graduates to obtain a Doctor of Medicine degree, requiring more stringent screening of applicants’ educational certificates. The case has spurred public debate and the circulation of related content on social media.
